What each motoring document means

The heading and issuing body determine the procedural stage. A Notice of Intended Prosecution, a Section 172 driver information request, a conditional offer, a Single Justice Procedure Notice and a summons do not ask the same question and do not use the same response route.

Notice of Intended Prosecution

A NIP warns that prosecution may be considered for an alleged offence. For offences to which the statutory rule applies, the first notice to the registered keeper is ordinarily subject to a 14 day service requirement, but exceptions and the keeper record matter.

Section 172 driver information request

A Section 172 requirement asks the recipient to identify the driver or provide information in their power to give. It is frequently printed on the same paper as a NIP, but the duties remain legally distinct. A possible NIP timing issue does not safely justify ignoring the driver request.

Conditional offer or motoring fixed penalty

An offer may conclude an eligible allegation without prosecution if its payment, licence and time conditions are met. It is not the same as a civil parking penalty charge notice. Check the proposed points, current licence record and printed deadline before acting.

Single Justice Procedure Notice or summons

These are court documents. An SJPN asks for a plea and may permit a magistrate to decide an eligible case on the papers. A summons or postal requisition identifies a criminal charge and hearing route. Obtain regulated advice promptly where plea, evidence or disqualification is disputed.

Motoring notice questions

Is a NIP the same as a Section 172 request?

No. The NIP is a warning about possible prosecution. The Section 172 requirement asks for driver information. They are commonly combined in one envelope.

Does using the checker submit a response?

No. The checker only explains the likely document and produces a private checklist. It does not contact the police, court, DVLA or any course provider.

Which deadline should I use?

Use the printed instructions on the original document. Any date shown by the checker is indicative and depends on the date entered. Service questions and unusual facts can change the legal analysis.
