Speeding NIP sent to an old address: what should I do?
An old address can affect when you see the paperwork, but it does not automatically cancel the allegation or the separate requirement to identify the driver.

Act promptly on the document you now have. Check the address and document reference date on the vehicle V5C, preserve evidence of when you moved and when the notice reached you, and obtain advice if a section 172 deadline or court date may have passed.
Why did the NIP go to my old address?
Police normally obtain registered keeper details from DVLA records. Updating a driving licence does not itself update the vehicle registration certificate. A recent purchase, lease arrangement or delayed V5C update can also cause the first notice to follow a longer chain.
Does the 14 day rule cancel a NIP sent to an old address?
Not automatically. The statutory question normally concerns service of the first notice on the registered keeper and contains exceptions where keeper details could not with reasonable diligence be obtained in time. A later notice to the nominated driver may arrive outside 14 days.
What if the 28 day response period has passed?
Do not ignore the paperwork. Preserve the notice and envelope, record when you first became aware of it and obtain prompt advice. Failure to provide driver information is a separate allegation.
What evidence should I preserve?
- The complete NIP and envelope
- The V5C document reference date and address
- Tenancy, completion or moving records
- Any mail redirection evidence
- The date you first received or learned of the notice
- Copies and proof of any response
What records should I update?
Check both your driving licence address and the address on each vehicle V5C. They are separate DVLA records. Use the official GOV.UK services and keep confirmation.
