The 12 point rule is not just an arithmetic exercise
A driver who accumulates 12 or more relevant penalty points within three years is ordinarily liable to disqualification. Previous disqualifications can affect the minimum period. Exceptional hardship is fact specific and is not established merely by showing ordinary inconvenience.
How to check whether points count towards 12
Start with the offence date for every endorsement, not only the date of conviction or the date the points disappear from the online licence record. For ordinary totting up purposes, the relevant question is whether the new offence was committed within three years of the earlier offences.
Use the official DVLA service to obtain the current record. Then compare the offence codes, offence dates and points with the allegation now faced. This checker cannot see the DVLA record and does not decide whether an endorsement is valid or relevant.
What happens at 12 points?
The court ordinarily considers a minimum six month disqualification. The statutory minimum can be longer where the driver has specified previous disqualifications within the relevant period. A court can also disqualify for an individual offence even where the total is below 12.
Exceptional hardship is a legal test
Loss of a licence can cause serious difficulty, but the court must be satisfied that the consequences are exceptional. Evidence about dependants, employees, health, finances and realistic alternatives may matter. A previous argument cannot simply be reused within three years on the same facts.
New drivers need a separate check
Revocation under the new driver rules is different from a totting up disqualification. A driver who reaches six points within the probationary period may face DVLA revocation. Use the separate guide if the first driving test was passed less than two years before the relevant offence.

Do points count from the offence date or conviction date?
The offence dates ordinarily determine the three year accumulation period. The record can remain visible for longer, so visibility alone does not answer the calculation.
Can I be banned with fewer than 12 points?
Yes. Some offences permit or require disqualification on their own facts. The checker only addresses the headline totting up threshold.
Does 12 points always mean six months?
Six months is the ordinary minimum, but specified previous disqualifications can increase it. The court may consider exceptional hardship or other mitigating circumstances under the statutory framework.
